Walter Hardwick fonds. 1946-1998.

The fonds primarily consists of textual records, including correspondence, reports, minutes, and published materials which together document Walter Hardwick's political and academic careers. They are arranged in series and sub-series based largely on his areas of activity and interest. The series are Urban Planning, Urban Planning Publications, Vancouver City Council, Open Learning Agency / Knowledge Network, Ministry of Education, Vancouver Urban Futures Project, Sumas Waste Processing Plant Environmental Review, Personal Papers, Essays, Reports and Reprints, and Subject Files. Photographs of architects' models for False Creek and Granville Island are also included. The fonds also includes four video tapes, consisting mainly of interview footage, and described separately in the Sound and Moving Image Database.

Walter Gordon Hardwick was born in 1932, and beginning in 1950 attended UBC, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota. He first joined UBC's Department of Geography in 1960, and until his retirement in 1997 taught courses in urban studies, urban geography, and political geography. He also headed the "Vancouver Urban Futures" survey project from 1971 to 1974, and a second related project called "Choosing Our Future" in the late 1980's - these projects served as a basis for urb...
